Rod Design by Deflection
Introduction of DynaRod
DynaRod is the tool for who want to design one's own bamboo rod.

I put all the considered thoughts which I gathered for around 10 years of my rod making life. This is everything which I know. For who starts rod crafting from now can utilize those knowledge and the method in a month or so.
Functions and features of DynaRod
  • Taper input
in addition to manual input, straight taper generation and cut & paste style input are available.
irregular point's dimension is also acceptable. Irregular point's dimension is like that we often measure the dimension but it is not on the pure PF Station (i.e. 5 inch) interval as there is a guide or ferrule. In that case, you can enter the dimension with any irregular point location. DynaRod will propagate into the specified PF Station interval.
  • Free Planing Form station interval
as the internal taper data is recorded in 1 inch interval, any length of PF station interval can be specified for input and output, such as 1, 3, 5, 6 inches, etc.. For NC beveller output, any inch inteval less than 1 (0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.00 inch) can also be specified.
  • Input and output in either of unit between inch/ounce (pound/yard measure) and cm/gram (metric measure).
  • Bamboo Species or other rod materials
enables to design a rod by using any kind of bamboo specie, bamboo attribute table is pre-defined in the system as Max investigated. The table carries such bamboos as Tonkin, Madake, Hachiku, Yadake (arrow bamboo), Suzutake (Kouyachiku), Tohchiku, hex Yadake (split arrow bamboo). User can define any material for a rod for oneself by means of MOE and weight per unit. You can define the nature of the bamboos you use for your rod too such as "heavy Tonkin", "light Tonkin", etc..

  • Tables for rod parts
All the rod parts for fly rod are pre-defined in the table such as Top Guide, Snake Guide, Stripping Guide, Ferrule, Fly Line, Grip, Reel Seat, Reel, and Varnish. Rod parts for lure rod, bate rod, spinning rod, are also possible. User can or needs to define the contents if desires to change. ex. Heavy guide, light guide, etc..
  • Rod Cross Section, solid/hollow
several kind of cross section can be selected or converted from one to another among Quadrangular, Pentagon, Hexagon, Octagon and Round. Hollow made can also be specified with the degree of hollowness.
There are useful hollow options such as Flat hollow, Fluting, Scalloping, incremental scalloping length, hollow start/end point specification, internal taper definition, etc.. NC Mill output is also available for those hollow cutting specs..
  • Calculations
    several calculation logics are packaged.
The most recommending method is to design a rod taper from the rod deflection. This will calculate the rod taper from a rod deflection which is drawn by the user.
Next possible design technique is to draw a stress curve and calculate it to the rod taper. To help users to draw either of rod deflection or stress curve, Deflection Designer Tool and Stress Curve Drawer Tool are available.
Of-course such calculation is available from a designed taper to its rod deflection, stress curve, by adjusting some part of rod dimensions, etc..
During the design calculation, any assumption can be changed on such as bamboo, rod pieces, cross section, solid/hollow, hollowness, action length, line weight, line length to fish, even on the rod speed, fly weight and a fish weight, etc..
  • Simulating Casting Style
user can define any casting style, which means how the rod is moved and stoped, in which rod speed, to which direction, up and down, forward and backward, etc.. This feature may also be possible to use as a casting simulator which tries to find how a maximum line load is forced on the rod while the rod is moved in translated, rotated and/or with extended arm fashion. (source: Don Phillips book). Basic casting styles are pre-defined in the table such as forward cast, backward cast, shooting, hooking a fish, vertical 4G, translated, rotated rod, extended arm, etc.. User can utilize those pre-defined casting style by modifying the factors of rod angle, height, width of movement and its time duration.
  • Animated Rod Deflection
under the defined casting style, this feature shows how the designed rod flexures. Stop motion can also be shown.
  • Line Loop animation and tip top movement
under the defined casting style and the rod speed, this feature shows how the designed rod makes line loop on the animated rod deflection graph as well as showing a tracing line of the tip top movement of the rod. Your may be able to know how your waved line or tailing loop is caused.
  • Graph Output
most of the DynaRod output are shown as graphs. Static graphs for design and animated graphs for viewing and analysis.
    the following graphs are generated;
  • Taper graph
shows the up and down of the taper.
  • Rod Deflection graph
shows rod deflection. This becomes one of the design objectives.
  • Action Genome
shows the plot of bend angles for each 1" section. This also becomes one of the design objectives.
  • Stress Curve
shows practical stress distribution through dynamic type calculation. This also becomes one of the design objectives in case of using Design by Stress Curve.
  • Action Genome vs Taper graph
    compares two kind of graphs
  • Stress Curve vs Taper graph
    compares two kind of graphs
  • Feel of Cast graph
under the defined casting, this feature shows how the caster' hand feels the weight of the entire rod (and something).
Some rod feels too heavy as a rod in comparison to feels of line weight. This can be utilized to identify the most appropriate line weight for a rod if the rod taper is known.
  • Moment graph
shows total moment, moments generated by rod components, moment per casting phase
  • Automatic Rod Parts Generation feature
for Fly Rod, all the rod parts are selected by the program using Parts Tables as a default. User can modify it of-course.
for Boat Rod, bate rod, spinning rod and Lure Rod, the parts data can be defined in the table. oops, this tool can design either of Fly Rod, Boat Rod and Lure Rod, though mainly aims Fly Rod.
  • Guide Spacing chart and Auto Guide Spacing feature
can automatically decide or change the guide spacing by pressing a button. Guide spacing chart can overview the arrangement of the guides and check if there is an overlap with ferrules. Default set of guide arrangement, number of guides can be also pre-defined by the length of the rod.
  • Rod Balance Design diagram
gives the calculated weight of the rod and each rod component
shows the balance (center of gravity) point of the completed rod.
shows the balance (center of gravity) point of the loaded rod with reel and full length of fly line.
recommends the most appropriate reel weight for the rod.
  • PF Setting Information
can be taken out in any PF station interval. Parts arrangement table is included in this output, so this output can be used when you start planing and dressing up the rod with parts.
NC mill interface can generate MACH3 TAP file in 1" (or any inch) interval. User can define any G code/M code in the table and describe the movement of the mill by invoking the codes with parameter variable in any sequence. Those code can embed the calculated rod dimension numbers at any place of the code.
  • Taper Archive feature
In the package, 64 classic rod tapers are included (with thanks only to Mr. Jerry Foster, the owner of Rodmakers site in Ca, US.).
Any rod that the user designs can be archived. For all the archived rod, the Archive panel can be displayed in ascending/descending and/or filtered order on any data field on the panel. Even without the archived rod taper, user can generate his own rod taper from the scratch any time.
  • Import and Export function
enables data backup, data migration to a new DynaRod version, give and take Archive data among friends.
  • Excel output
All the calculation results are recorded to an excel file for a rod. Hard copy, re-calculation, making other graphs can be freely produced.
  • Help function
The package includes HTML documentation. Each DynaRod panel can invoke the corresponding help page by pressing [DynaRod Help] button on [menu bar]. Or, user can read through the contents from the top of the HTML home page following the navigation links.
